Handfastings & Weddings

Ancient celtic traditions & Non-Dominational Services

What is a Handfasting?

A handfasting is a timeless ritual of sacred union, where a couple’s hands are gently bound

with ribbons or cords to symbolize their commitment and connection.

You may have seen it portrayed in Braveheart, Outlander, or Game of Thrones—

a gesture rich with meaning, echoing love that defies convention and endures through the ages.

Once a traditional way to pledge partnership before legal marriage, handfasting has roots across

Celtic and Norse cultures and has evolved into a deeply personal ceremony.

Whether used in weddings, betrothals, or vow renewals, it invites the couple

to pause, be witnessed, and honour the crossing of a sacred threshold.

Each binding is unique, woven with intention, spirit, & the quiet power of saying yes.

Land Acknowledgement – Unama’ki / Cape Breton

With deep respect and gratitude, Sacred Steps acknowledges that the land on which we live, gather,

and hold ceremony is the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People.

This land, known as Unama’ki, is one of the seven traditional districts of Mi’kma’ki,

the homeland of the Mi’kmaq Nation.

We honour the enduring spirit, culture, and teachings of the Mi’kmaq,

and recognize their sovereignty and sacred relationship to this land, water, and sky.

In all that we do, may we walk gently, listen deeply, and act with reverence—

for the ancestors, for the land, and for the generations to come.
